School of Nursing
Oakland University has grown from its inception in 1957 to become a world-class institution educating more than 20,000 students annually. Through a private donation of $2 million and estate property to Michigan State University, a satellite school was established. Oakland University provides over 260 degree and certificate programs delivered through traditional on-campus, innovative online and research opportunities. The School of Nursing a Oakland University was founded in 1974 and offered only a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. It wasn’t until 1984 that a Master of Science in Nursing degree and 2006 for a Doctorate of Nursing Practice became available. All nursing programs are fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
Master of Science in Nursing
The Master of Science in Nursing graduate series is designed to build on the skills learned at undergraduate level. The advanced practice nursing curriculum focuses on theory, research and leadership proficiency in health care. Three tracks are available through the MSN program:
Adult/Gerontological Nurse Practitioner – Advanced practice nurse providing primary care to adults with acute and chronic health concerns. Students are eligible to take national certification exams upon completion of the program.
Family Nurse Practitioner – Professional nurses acting as primary care giver to patients of all ages. Focus areas include cultural sensitivity training, health promotion and health management for children, adolescents and adults.
Nurse Anesthesia – Specialists in anesthesia care in a variety of health care settings. This program is a collaboration between Oakland University and Beaumont Health System and is the only accredited program in the county.
To better accommodate the growing number of students balancing multiple responsibilities while continuing their education, Oakland University has added online and hybrid programs that meet the quality and flexibility demands required by the student body. Innovative graduate-level health care degrees are available for:
Nursing Education (online) – Master of Science in Nursing with emphases in Nursing Education prepares nurses to work in academic environments to teach future nurses.
Clinical Nurse Leader (online) – Registered nurse who specialize in overseeing patient care by assessing health risks, develop strategies for improvements, coordinate team communication and identify solutions.
RN to BSN (online) – This program maximizes career opportunities for registered nurses without a bachelor’s degree. The majority of the program is completed online with the exception of one clinical rotation.

Master of Science in Nursing
Using undergraduate studies as a foundation for the MSN degree program, registered nurses are given an opportunity to choose a specialization track as a family nurse practitioner, a clinical nurse leader or practice in education or nursing administration.
Advanced Clinical Practice – Family Nurse Practitioner – Primary care giver to patients of all ages. This is a part-time hybrid program for enhanced learning online and on-campus.
Health System Nurse Specialist (Clinical Nurse Leader, Educator Manager or Informaticist) – Promote and support superior health care in clinical, academic and private practice settings.

College of Health Professions/McAuley School of Nursing
The University of Detroit Mercy began 125 years ago as two separate organizations. Founded by the beliefs of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) and the Religious Sisters of Mercy, each order wanted to promote individual development through education. In 1990, the University of Detroit and Mercy College consolidated their efforts to expand their academic effectiveness. Now offering more than 100 academic programs across eight schools and colleges, UDM now incorporates information technology as an integral part of its program delivery system. The College of Health Professions and McAuley School of Nursing also include web-enhanced and online course offerings for improved flexibility for its adult students.
Master of Science in Nursing: Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL)
The Clinical Nurse Leader concentration provides advanced clinical and systems knowledge and leadership skills across all health care settings. The emphasis of this program is providing medical services to under-served groups and communities.

Master of Science in Nursing: Health Systems Management (HSM)
The Health Systems Management concentration of the master’s degree builds a systems-thinking approach to health care through informatics, planning, decision-making, care transitions and outcomes management.
Master of Science in Anesthesia

Master of Science in Nursing Education (NE) with CNS Option

In addition, training through this series includes expertise as an Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist. Family Nurse Practitioner – Primary health care for individuals and families in a community and across a lifespan.
Infant Child Adolescent Health/Pediatric Nurse Practitioner – Advanced practice nurses who act as primary health care providers for infants, children and adolescents.
Medical-Surgical Clinical Nurse Specialist, Midwifery Program – This is a dual program for both FNP and Nurse Midwife and allows students certification in both disciplines. Skills acquired allow graduates to become primary providers for all ages including pregnancy and childbirth.
Nursing Informatics – This is an interdisciplinary certificate program for enhanced knowledge of health care informatics, statistics and database systems.
Psychiatric-Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist – Advanced practice nurses skilled in psychiatric assessments, psychopathology and pharmacology for patients of all ages.
Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner – Management of psychiatric conditions with non-pharmacological and psychopharmacological therapies for all patient ages and diversities.

The Master of Science in Anesthesia graduate program is a collaborative effort between UM-Flint’s School of Health Professions and Studies and Hurley Medical Center. The full-time, 24-month track provides the knowledge necessary for a career as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. This rigorous program requires more than 40 hours per week and integrates both classroom lessons and clinical instruction at both institutions.

Neonatal Nurse Practitioner – Advanced practice nurse with specialization in high-risk neonates. Areas of study include disease prevention, health promotion, clinical management and care through family interaction.
Nurse-Midwife (CNM) – Primary care nurse with specialty knowledge in women’s health, midwifery and newborn health.
Pediatric Nurse Practitioner – Acute Care – Advanced practice nurse with skills in caring for critically ill children and adolescents. Expert proficiency in providing physiological and psychological care for patients with acute, chronic, urgent, and life-threatening illness and injury. Graduates are eligible to take a certification examination.
Pediatric Nurse Practitioner – Primary Care – Provider of primary care for pediatric patients in urban and global environments. Skills include well-child exams, health promotion, developmental screening, diagnosis and management of all types of health issues.
Psychiatric Mental Health – CNS and NP – Concentration area for increased knowledge in neurological, biological, physiological and pharmacological assessment for health management and interventions. Practice includes study of addictions, gender issues, HIV/AIDS, eating and sleep disorders, violence and psychiatric illness.
Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP) – Advanced practice nurse specializing in the care of women, neonates and children. The goal is to promote improved health, disease prevention and changing health care systems for women in urban environments.
