With the passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), master’s in nursing degree programs in Tennessee, as well as in other states, are growing in importance. As more people gain health insurance, the need for nurses with advanced-level degrees will also become critical. Many nurses who continue their education to obtain a master’s degree become nurse educators, which are listed as one of the top 20 growing occupations in the state of Tennessee. It is expected that by 2020, there will be a 38 percent growth in health educator positions in the state.
Today, the country is facing a nursing shortage and Tennessee is no exception. In fact the Tennessee Center for Nursing indicates that Tennessee is expected to see more than 285,000 nursing positions available by 2020, and the supply of qualified nurses is predicted to be far below the demand for those with the qualifications necessary. Much of this is due to high number of retirees around 2015 combined with the growing need for nursing candidates that already exists. Experts say that, by 2025, the job openings for nurses could be as high as 500,000.
These statistics indicate a growing need for individuals who have successfully completed master’s in nursing degree programs in Tennessee.
